TBL 5×10: Wayne’s Big Reward

Previously on The Biggest Loser a battle of Brains and Brawn that Caitlin and Daina won, earning immunity from elimination for themselves.

Tonight training gets tougher but it’s the mental battle that’s proving the toughest for some.

Michelle and Shannan jog up to Camp Biggest Loser for another day’s training.
Shannan wants to rebuild his team’s confidence as they’ve taken a bit of a whipping in the last few days. Shannan comes in and finds his team already warmed up and training on the treadmills and spin bikes.
They’re doing interval training today. Tibata? Something like that.

There’s 8 different exercises and you do each one for 20 seconds on then 10 seconds off and you repeat that same exercise 4 more times. Then you move on to the next exercise.
Phoebe explains that interval training works because your heart rate goes up and down a lot. Which is good, I guess?

Shannan’s got Chris following the exercise circuit behind Wayne so he always has a benchmark to judge himself against.
Chris is looking to quit a couple of times but Shannan’s always there to keep pushing him. But at the end of the training session he’s grateful to Shannan for his efforts today. And Shannan is also impressed by Chris’ effort today.

Michelle visits her team, too. They’re also training already.
She wants to check in on them to see how they’re going with their endurance training as well as their interval training.
Michelle also wants Rick and Joe to try 16km/h today on the treadmill. Joe’s doubtful they can do that pace but they crank the treadies up to that speed and they manage to go along quite nicely!

Elise and Teneale are doing some boxing training with Michelle. Elise can tell Michelle is going to try and dig into them today and she’s hoping if she trains hard enough Michelle will let her out early.
Michelle asks Elise during training for something she doesn’t like about herself. Elise says her “negative appreciation of herself”. How many times a day? Numerous times, more than 20, she says with a laugh.
Elise is worried nobody will like her for just being herself. She’s so used to being Elise and Teneale.
Michelle says that other people probably do compare them but they’re probably the worst offenders, comparing each other to themselves.

Elise has a mantra – “I do deserve the best.”
Her first couple of times saying it were unconvincing! But Michelle coaxes her into louder declarations until Michelle is happy with her and says she does deserve the best!

Your body works better with Burgen!

After training the contestants freshen up and head out to the parade ground to have a chat to Hayley.
Another “special event”. Life here has a routine but is also unpredictable. Mmmkay.
Hayley then mentions Wayne’s weightloss and Geoff having left the game and so on. Cue recap footage of Geoff leaving!

And now Wayne’s effort will be rewarded!
First thing Wayne sees is his little daughter. Really little, and he’s 43. Jeepers.
His wife is there too, awww, kisses and hugs.
His wife says he looks fantastic. Wayne then introduces her around to all the other contestants. His daughter’s a little shy but his wife is very friendly to everyone though.

Hayley asks the wife if she’s missed him and of course she has. She’s missed his love and support and so on.

Then Hayley asks Wayne if he was maybe expecting someone else to have turned up?
Wayne says maybe the two elder sons maybe? Maybe? Perhaps? He peers hopefully towards where the girls came from.

And yes, of course they are. Both of them look quite sheepish to be there. Can’t imagine why since both are sticks. Be proud of not being a blob like your Dad!
Wayne tells the boys he’s lost about 32kg and his boys are only about 65kg!

Phoebe says she hopes she gets a chance to impress her family, though it’s a nice fuzzy feeling seeing other people’s families turn up.

Wayne takes his family up to his room to show them around. He shows the sleep apnea machine he used to have to wear that is now sitting in the cupboard as he’s not had to use it recently and isn’t suffering any ill effects. Nicely done!
Then they go to the kitchen as that’s where Wayne says the weightloss really happens there. The ones who get the diet right are the ones getting the big weightloss numbers.

Once they get there Wayne passes out some low calorie ice creams. How generous!

Wayne notices his little daughter has lost a little weight which he thinks may have been due to all the junk they used to it.
They have a roster for cooking meals apparently. And washing dishes and emptying bins and so on.

Then Wayne takes them to the trophy room and the Honour Board room to show off the money and his name on the wall and so on.

Wayne also shows them all the big gym. His boys in particular are interested to see the weights and stuff. They’re both interested in bulking up and one of the boys had been getting into boxing a bit and now Wayne can get involved with that too.

Wayne then gets to take his wife and kids off to the beach for a picnic!
Little bloodnut daughter wants shade to picnic in. Smart girl!

Wayne says he used to always give his daughter chocolates or whatever when she wanted it but now he’s hoping to get her out to the park and so on instead.

Wayne’s woman has gotten him some presents to take back with him. A picture of her and the kids and also a picture of him and her in Thailand. Back when Wayne was fat!
Then Wayne goes down on to the beach to make sandcastles with his daughter, awww!

Then it’s time for them to say goodbye and they head off after hugs and cuddles and kisses.
Wayne’s struggling to say goodbye. But he’s losing the weight so she’s happy he’s doing well.

Tomorrow night Matt “The Lunchbox” Shirvington turns up to give them some sprint training, much to the delight of the ladies!
Though apparently some sprinting training won’t prepare them for the 10km run they have planned for the contestants.
Well golly, maybe they should do some training that will actually prepare them for the challenge ahead?

Nahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

It seems like the cast this year is pretty likable as a whole. This may not be good for ratings, but I like it.

Wayne is a pretty good guy. His wife's a doll and his kids are great. Problem is, he's been there only a few weeks and it'll be tough for him to lose more weight from here on out. At the beach, he just looked like a regular guy and certainly not like a Biggest Loser contestant.

I've seen it said on another forum that the show seems a little racist this year in that there aren't any minorites represented in the cast. I don't know about that, but doesn't it seem strange that the producers are bringing in a “great” white sprinter to teach the cast how to run? Like there aren't a hundred black sprinters who could blow this guy out of the water? Maybe it's different in Australia, but show me the best white American 100m sprinter, and I'll show you fifty black sprinters who can beat him.

I don't know about that, Chris is rapidly climbing my personal dislike meter!
I agree though, I do like being able to cheer more of them on than wanting to throw things at the screen all the time. :)

I've never understood the complaints over a lack of racial diversity or diversity in sexual orientation. Why are you upset that people of your minority aren't gigantic lard arses? :D

And yes, it's (very) different in Australia. While we do have a dark skinned minority, as America does, we also have a much smaller population, so the pool of potential talent in that regard we can draw on is consequently smaller.
And yes, there're better sprinters in the world than Matt Shirvington but for many years he was our best, including holding 5 consecutive national titles from 1998 and holding the Australian 100m sprint record from 1998-2003. There's no need for quote marks around the great as he's one of our better sprinters in recent times. :)

Probably more importantly though, he's done a fair bit of TV work over the years and people seem to like him. Especially the ladies. ;)

    • Jeff

Maybe the quote marks were unfair. I'm not familiar with Shirvington so I apologize. I just find it funny whenever I see a white champion sprinter on TV, because they get shut out when it comes to the Olympics, or any world championships for that matter.

No white man has ever officially broken the 10-second barrier in the 100m dash. The first black guy to do it: Jim Hines (USA), October 14, 1968.

The last non-black to win Olympic gold: Alan Wells (Britain), 1980, Moscow.

This is why I let out an audible snigger when I see a white sprinter on TV. But then, the best teachers aren't always the best athletes.

Hey Jeff, at his peak Matt Shirvingto was the fastest white man on the planet, so he obviously knows a thing or two about running. Also he is a very nice person, and it was good of him to give his time to help out:)
