TBL 5×09: Brains vs Brawn Challenge

Previously on The Biggest Loser… tension in the Elimination Room, oooh!

Jenni got sent home and now Phoebe is Wayne’s new partner.
Then a tension breaking training session with the Waratahs, which was pretty awesome.

Tonight another Brains vs Brawn challenge. Couples vs Couples this time, not training team vs training team.
The All-Girl teams better hope they have the brains to pull through because there’s some big strong boys in the current crop.

The contestants go for a walk out of Camp to the big training oval to see a huge contraption set up.
It’s time for this week’s challenge. Win the challenge, get immunity from the next elimination!

David hurt his shoulder at the Waratahs training so he and Phil are very much hoping to win today.

But to win today you’ll need a balance of brains and brawn.
There’s seven buckets suspended by a rope and it’s their job to keep the buckets up in the air.
The job of the Brains part of the equation is to answer questions related to nutritional information. Rick’s worried by that since neither he nor Joe are the sharpest tools in the shed.
The job of the Brawn is just to hold the bucket up in the air.

The buckets are currently empty but for every wrong answer the bucket will have 5 litres of water added to it.
Phoebe says her calorie knowledge isn’t the greatest but she’s more likely to be able to answer the questions than hold up all the water!

The Brawns have to keep the buckets off the ground and their feet behind the line.
Hayley will ask a question and the Brains have to answer the question on their chalkboard and then they’ll reveal it.

Last couple standing wins immunity, which Hayley has already mentioned a number of times but hey, why not say it again!

Phoebe’s the brains, Wayne’s the brawn.
Caitlin’s the brawn.
Shannon’s the brains because of his legs, apparently. Not so bright, he masses considerably more and shouldn’t find it difficult at all. Just stand there!
Lisa’s the brains for their pair.
One of the pink ladies is the brawn. Hell if I can sort them out yet.
Phil’s the brawn since, as mentioned, David has a shoulder injury.

1st Question:
Sparkling water contains more calories than still water?

Lots of trues and falses in about even number. The answer is, of course, false. Both contain zero calories. Because they’re just water!

2nd Question:
10g of protein contains how many calories – 20, 40 or 60?
Correct Answer: B.
They all got it wrong!

Teneale’s the pink lady being the brawn. Teneale’s not enjoying it!

3rd Question:
A small serve of salted hot chips contains how many grams of fat – 7, 17 or 27?
Answer: 17g
And every gram of it is delicious, no doubt!

4th:
A teaspoon of sugar in your tea adds how many calories – 16, 24 or 32?
A: 16.

Caitlin’s totally zoned out, very zen, leaning back while holding the rope.

5th:
Which contains fewer grams of fat – scrambled egg, fried egg, egg with hollandaise sauce
A: Scrambly!

6th:
Deep fried spring roll contains how many calories – 180, 267, 408 calories
A: 408 calories.

Only Yellow and Purple got that one.
Chris is bitching and moaning about how hard it is to hang on to the bar attached to the rope. He’s not sure how much longer he can last.

7th:
Which of these picnic items has the most calories – medium sized apple, white bread roll, a serving of mild cheddar cheese
A: white bread roll (232 calories) – apple has 94 and cheese has 128 calories

They start adding the weight to Blue’s bucket and Chris can’t hold it any longer. And Chris chucks a tantrum, of course. Shannon tells him it’s alright though.

Teneale is struggling mightily with her bucket, she’s holding it way out in front of her and it’s on her fingers and she doesn’t think she can hold out till the next question… ad break!

After the ad break Pink are out too.

8th:
How many calories an be found in a half cup serving of cooked white rice – 99, 199, 299?
A: 99 calories

Only Yellow and Green got that right.
Wayne and Phoebe are out now too.

9th:
How many calories are in 250ml of diluted cordial – 40, 60, 80?
A: 80 calories!

10th:
Which contains more calories – 1 toasted english muffin, 1 slice raisin toast, 1 toasted crumpet
A: 1 toasted english muffin (156 calories)

Yellow are the only ones to get the last two right.
And now Jarna’s out too.

Only Green (Rick and Joe), Grey (Phil and David) and Yellow (Caitlin and Daina)
Grey: 35 litres
Green: 30 litres
Yellow: 15 litres

Caitlin’s doing alright so far but she hopes Daina keeps getting them right!

11th:
In an average sized wine glass which of these three contains the fewest calories – dry white wine, champagne, red wine
A: Champagne (98 calories) with the other wines having 102 calories.

Yellow again are the only ones to get it right!
Rick and Joe are snipping at each other. Rick drinks wine but doesn’t know how many calories are in it!

Caitlin’s trying to encourage Phil, coach him into pulling back a bit, etc. But he can’t even last through Hayley’s next question…

12th:
How many calories in one large 90g hamburger bun – 135, 235, 335?
A: 235

13th:
How many calories are in a cup of tea with a tablespoon of full fat milk – 16, 26, 36?
A: 16

Both get both questions wrong. Joe is really struggling now.

14th:
Which of the following contains the most calories – 150g sirloin steak with some fat, cup of home prepared garlic king prawns, 200g of baked potato?
A: the prawns!

Joe nearly drops the bucket. Caitlin’s doing it tough too… but Joe finally drops his bucket and Caitlin’s still hanging in there.
Caitlin and Daina win immunity yet again!

Caitlin’s quite pleased that they’ve won a physical challenge.
She also says they want to get higher on the weightloss leaderboard so they won’t be slacking off, even though they’ve got immunity again.

Tomorrow night training gets even tougher… but it’s the battle within that’s really raging, Mr Voiceover Man says.
And someone gets rewarded after a testing week…
Wouldn’t be Wayne, would it? The guy who got Biggest Loser of the week? We’ll see…

Chips in Australia are more properly called crisps, they are very thin slices of whole potato, almost roundish, which are deep fried and are similar, but not the same as, things like Pringles, which are really reconstituted mashed potato sprayed onto a conveyor belt. They are sold cold in packets at most stores.

Chips are similar to your French fries, however Australia and the Brits cut them a lot thicker, which actually uses less fat. There are a few places, like Mcdonalds, that sell potato straws (French fries) but in the main, our hot chips are equivalent to around 4 of the normal sized french fries. These are sold hot and wrapped in paper or served in small cardboard containers from takeaway joints.

I like the calorie-counting challenges, because the strongest don't always win, but this one was pretty unfair. "How many calories are in a spring roll"? Seriously! I only need a few more bits of information, such as what ingredients are in it, how much does each ingredient weigh, what kind of oil is it fried in... Even Michelle and Shannan would be guessing on that one.

However, one question should have been a slam-dunk for all of them: "How many calories in 10g of protein?". That's as basic as it gets, and they all should have learned that the first day. Both protein and carbs are 4cal/g, fat is 9cal/g, and alcohol is 7cal/g. I blame the trainers for this.

One question I have though. Are "chips" the same in Australia as in England, that is to say are they like the french fries we have here in America? Because our chips are really thin, crispy, and cooked all the way through. Like Pringles, for example.

I thought the most ridiculous was the steak, potato or "homemade garlic prawns" - wtf! If I made garlic prawns they'd have way less than 600 cals or whatever they said...and that would be homemade! Way too much possible variation there..
